Santuario della Madonna del Carmine

In the 12th century, the Carmelite Fathers settled in the church of “Santa Lucia fuori le mura”, later enlarged and dedicated to the Annunziata. A local tradition considers this place as the first burial of Agatha, as testified by the original dedication to Saint Lucy. The Sanctuary, damaged by the 1693 earthquake, was rebuilt in 1729.

Inside the church we can admire several ex-voto tablets, where episodes of devotees’ lives are painted to remember the graces they received. These paintings were commissioned and donated since 1867. In the left aisle you can find an interesting altar, with a painting of the Saint Agatha and Saint Lucia, and a statue Agatha, inspired by the features of lady Rosalia Petruso Grimaldi, murdered in 1784.
